Cataract surgery is one of the safest surgical procedures performed today. Surgeons have performed cataract surgery for over 35 years, but recent technological and surgical advances have made it a more gentle and reliable process than ever before. Cataract surgery can be completed on an outpatient basis.
Before cataract surgery the eye is anesthetized. The surgeon then makes a tiny incision at the edge of the cornea. The front portion of the lens is opened, and the cataract is removed. An intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted in place of the patient’s natural lens.
A cataract is a clouding of the normal clear, natural lens in your eye. Cataracts can develop slowly over a period of years but in some cases, they may develop quickly in only a few months. As the cloudiness increases, your vision becomes progressively worse. Cataracts may affect only one eye, or both eyes but at different rates.
Cataracts are usually due to the aging process but may also be caused by heredity, eye trauma, diabetes, or even some medications.
